Our
vision continues to be focused on the very concepts that have created our
success from the beginning. Developing prosperous relationships with our
customers, with the highest possible level of service and professionalism,
creates a climate favorable for success and prosperity. Operational performance
is continually evaluated to ensure the highest of quality products. Competitive
information is gathered
through customer surveys and market research to better understand our
customers' needs, values, and expectations. We strongly believe that planning
at all levels of processing from seed to can will guarantee constant
improvement in company performance and customer satisfaction. By providing
innovative ideas and products, we will continue to stay first in the business,
ahead in the marketplace and distinguished in places to work and do business.
The
history of the company speaks for itself. The late Carl R. Hirzel, a Brewmaster
by trade, founded Hirzel Canning in 1923. His first product was
sauerkraut, sold only in wooden kegs and barrels. The next year he began
canning kraut with the help of his wife Lena and oldest son, Karl. In the third
year, the family packed their first fancy whole tomatoes.
The
company grew steadily to where it is now operated by the third and fourth
generations of our family. We have three processing plants located in Northwest
Ohio with extensive greenhouse and farming operations producing some of the raw
product requirements. In addition, over 30 independent growers supply fresh
tomatoes.
We
primarily produce canned tomatoes and tomato products along with sauerkraut. A
complete assortment of over 100 items is available in both retail and
foodservice sizes, packed in metal cans, glass and flexible packaging. A bulk,
aseptic storage facility for tomato concentrate is unique to the organization,
one of less than six in the entire USA.
We
carefully seed and germinate our tomatoes, just like it was done our
grandfather's days. Except now they're grown in our elaborate greenhouses until
the plants are old enough to be transplanted to the fields.
Our products are produced in various stainless steel processing systems and
packaged in the most recent state-of-the-art container to preserve our garden
fresh taste.
One
tradition that we've made sure to continue is that our products are personally
inspected throughout the planting, harvesting, and canning processes; however,
a new tradition is the use of aseptic storage to preserve the wholesome fresh
taste of our crushed tomatoes, so we can process year round.
In 75
years, Hirzel Canning Company and Farms has grown from the basement of its
founder, C.R. Hirzel, to three processing plants, a greenhouse operation, and
many farming operations. Sales of Private Label, Dei FratelliT and Star CrossT
brands of canned tomato products and Silver FleeceT brand of Sauerkraut extend
out over a 2000 mile radius from Northwest Ohio.
Times and technology may have changed a few things since our grandfather
started his operation, but one thing still remains the same: Hirzel brings only
the best quality products to your table.
