Hirzel Canning Company Does the Common Thing, But We Do it Uncommonly Well!

We have always been very generous in giving assets and time. Individual members of the company serve on public boards and committees for the betterment of the community. Annually, over 500,000 lbs. of canned foods are donated to area food banks and social support groups. We sponsor five annual high school scholarships and fund the United Way, Feed the Children, Junior Achievement, the Independent College Fund, United Negro College Fund, The Ohio State University College of Agriculture, Public Radio and Public TV. When the local volunteer fire department was organized, our company built and donated their first fire truck. Members of all generations of the family have served on local, state and national boards, both public and professional.

Hirzel's customer base consists of retailers, wholesalers, retail distributors, foodservice distributors, the U.S. Government and re-manufacturers. The business is divided into three major segments: retail, foodservice and industrial.

All of the tomato growers that provide raw product to Hirzel Canning Company are located within 70 miles of the nearest processing facility. The growers' close proximity to processing plants ensures that the raw product is of the highest quality when it arrives at the manufacturing plants. Nearly all of the tomatoes are processed within 6 to 10 hours of their harvest.

Hirzel Canning Company documents many of the procedures occurring inside and outside of its processing plants. With an integrated greenhouse operation, the tomato transplant types and schedules can be controlled to ensure a well-planned planting schedule. The tomato transplant and grower records include grower field codes, grower lot codes, and variety records. All chemical applications (spray records) are recorded in the grower field-code document, including the name of the licensed applicator. In addition to the spray records, Hirzel Canning Company has random samples of tomatoes tested (by a certified laboratory) for pesticide and herbicide residues.

During the unloading process, the tomatoes are graded for wholeness, blemishes, foreign material, and color. If the quality does not meet our minimum standards, the load is rejected. With nine years of experience in growing and processing certified organic tomatoes, we continue to offer All Natural tomato products under the Dei Fratelli and Star Cross brands. The Certified Organic tomato products and sauerkraut are sold under various customer labels.
